Letter of the week(s) - V

Keanan was feeling much better yesterday so we finished up our fun with the letter V by making a volcano! He even helped Zac make a real exploding volcano (baking soda and vinegar)!! Last week we made a vase with flowers, and a vegetable V. We also checked out some books about volcanoes, violins and vegetables at the library.

Kyla prefers walking to crawling now! She is quite good! She has also developed a little attitude and had her first taste of time-out this week. She has been having troubles yelling at mommy and talking in a really mean, nasty voice. We realized it was at about a year that we started time-outs with Keanan. Oy, here we go.

Can't believe her birthday is next Sunday!

He holds my hand

Jesus gave me a beautiful picture of us (he and I) today. Throughout my day he is always right there with me, I know this in my head. But to really BE with him and invite him into my day I just need to reach out and take his hand.

His hand is always offered, always warm, safe and inviting. Full of power, grace and love. But so often I ignore his hand. I get into a state of "I do it myself", which never ends well. Even in the mundaneness of mommyhood he wants to hold my hand!

So today as I pick up cheerios, wipe noses, change diapers, clean the kitchen and all the other numerous tasks that await me - I will be holding my Savior's hand.

Thank you Jesus for such a perfect picture. Thank you that you know exactly what I need today. Please help me to realize when I let go of your hand so that I can turn to you and hold tight to it again. Amen!

Back from the dead

I feel mostly human today! Just a little stuffed up, but other than that great!!! Such a change from the other night in urgent care when I was sure my brain was on fire! I learned my lesson about staying hydrated when ill. My client is now free to have her baby =)

The kids are a little under the weather though. They both have slight fevers off and on today and are pretty crabby. Hopefully it will pass soon.

Thanks to everyone for all the prayers, please keep them coming for Keanan and Kyla.

I Hate Being Sick

I have been stuck in bed or on the couch all day. Zac had to stay home from work to take care of the kids. Ugh! I've had a sinus headache, plugged up head, and fever off and on all day long.

The worst part is that my first client could go into labor at any moment! If she calls me right now I would have to send my backup instead. I would cry! Please pray that I get better.

In other awesome news: I got my first paying client today!! Due in March!

Sad...but good

I got a call this afternoon from Bates Technical College. They decided to cancel the doula training class that I was signed up for due to lack of enrollment. I almost cried. I have been SOOOO excited about this class and the hands on training I was going to get. They refunded my dad's credit card, since he had so awesomely paid for the training.

BUT...

I have decided that I am going to go full steam ahead and get certified! It is an online program that takes 3-6 months, depending on how fast I can meet the requirements. The best hands on training I can get will be from actually going to births, the first of which I go on call for next Wednesday! I start tomorrow with my certification, and my dad is still paying for it. I love my dad!

So wish me luck and lots of clients!

So I'm a little obsessive...

I got it in my head that I wanted to start moving Kyla over to her big girl room. When I get an idea in my head I get a little crazy. I just HAVE to do it. So we did! Keanan, Kyla and I moved her entire room over this morning! She is napping in there now. It feels good to get that done!

It's just missing a butterfly clock and cute bedding set that she is getting for her birthday, and a custom name plaque for her door that I had made. We get the name plaque tomorrow and then I will take pictures!

No more baby

Kyla is walking!! Everywhere! She is so proud of herself and super cute =)

This evening our family all helped to put up the decorations in Kyla's newly painted big girl room. Keanan had fun putting leaves up on the tree and Kyla even tried to put some of the stickers up as well (it didn't stick because it was just the paper, but it was really sweet). It is sooooo amazingly cute! I will post lots of pictures as soon as we get all her furniture moved into it, some time in the next two weeks.

We did a little photo shoot of Kyla a few nights ago. Zac got some really cute shots. I will post them after he has some time to edit and mess with them.

I feel like she is quickly leaving the baby stage and becoming a toddler. I'm not sad about it, just excited to see what God has in store for her this next year!

Letter of the week(s) - U

We have been having some fun with the letter U these last two weeks. Keanan made an umbrella U, and underwater scene, and some fancy umbrellas. We also checked out some books at the library about umbrellas and underwater life.

Keanan and I have started to have some "school" time this week. Just about 15 minutes a day where we focus on some sight words, numbers 1-10, and letters. I used a lot of ideas from this website: http://confessionsofahomeschooler.blogspot.com/ She has TONS of free stuff. We are just having fun. As soon as the fun stops, we sing our ending song and go on to something else.

Other goings ons:
Kyla took 6 steps for Zac today! I also put the first coat of paint in her big-girl room today, can't believe she is almost 1!! We swear she is starting to say words: dog, go, up, mama, dada. She is also doing the sign for eat and all done. I love being able to communicate in new ways with her!

Keanan was complaining about his stomach hurting before dinner and then puked on the floor and in the toilet right after dinner. Poor kid. He felt better after that though. Got a haircut, took a bubble bath and went to bed. Hoping it is nothing and he is fine in the morning.

Happy birthday party / finally out of the military party to my brother, Mathew tonight! Sorry we can't be there =( Have fun!

Yep, that's Zac. Yep, that's the same bike that he wrecked on and lost his leg from. Yep, I'm really proud of him. =)

11 months

One word prayer

Lysa (president of Proverbs 31 Ministries) has an intriging post on her blog today. She is coming up with one word prayers for her kids this year, "So during 2011, I will have one word chosen specifically for each of my kids as a focal point when I pray for them." What a great idea! I am stealing this for my kids, Zac, and myself.

Keanan's word is DISCOVER. He is a little sponge, asking questions and learning all that he can about his world. I pray that he will discover something about God every day. I pray that he will discover more things that fascinate him. I pray that he will discover how even he, an amazing 2 1/2 year old, can be used by God in his little world.

Kyla's word is GROW. Today my baby girl is 11 months old! I pray that she will continue to grow strong physically. I pray that she will grow in her independence as she moves from baby to toddler. I pray that she will grow spiritually toward her heavenly daddy as her mind grows and understands who he is.

Zac's word is ADVENTURE. He craves it. I pray that he sees the adventure God has planned for him each day. I pray that he chases the bigger adventure that God is revealing to him for our family. I pray that he helps others see the adventure that God has planned for them.

My word is COURAGE. This year is going to be one of much change. I usually tend to resist change. I pray that the Lord gives me courage to step out into the unknown. I pray for courage as a mother to my kids in this crazy world. I pray for courage as a wife. I pray for courage as I begin my journey as a doula.

What are your words?

Breastfeeding

I considered myself just-about a pro. I mean, I have nursed two kids both until the age of 1 (1 month to go for Kyla, but there is no doubt she will continue until 1). But, as with all other topics related to birth and the early postpartum stage, I have been recently humbled by what I do not know.

For my doula class / certification I am reading "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding" by the La Leche League (international breastfeeding support organization). Fascinating! So many tips / tricks / facts in there I would never have thought of!

I am also enrolled in a Breastfeeding Basics course online. This has a more clinical feel than the book. I have to take tests and pass with at least 80% on all of them, so I am paying attention! Learning lots!

Boobs are AMAZING! (God is a genius!)

Happy New Year!

For the second year in a row we rang in the new year last night with the Ireland's. This years festivities consisted of a pancake dinner, king crab legs after the kids were in bed, henna on the 4 adults applied by me (I have to practice!), yummy wine, Chris teaching us pinnacle (sp), and a sparkling cider toast at midnight. Good times =)

I have resolved this year to drink more water, get more sleep, and exercise more. Excited to see what God has in store for us in 2011!
